This project was to design and produce an effective double page spread for a national magazine with a headline “Is it too late for Canada’s Forests?” We used Lorem ipsum to fill in the body. I rearranged and stragetically justified areas in the body to avoid orphans, widows and rags to make it look more organized and aesthetically pleasing.
Fnatic Headset
The project was to create an object from scratch using Adobe Illustrator. I drew multiple draft images of the object chosen, all drawn from different angles to find what position would look best. I then chose one of the draft images and refined it by redrawing it in higher detail, such as adding in shading and line work. The higher quality image was then placed in Illustrator to use as my guide. The finished result is a gaming headset.
Cookbook
The project was to promote two clients who own a local catering company in Halifax. They wanted each student to recreate their cookbook as the older one was outdated. This is the result of what I created for them.
Alexander Graham Bell
The class project was to redesign Alexander Graham Bell’s Museum’s café or items in their gift shop. We collaborated with the Parks Canada division of the Federal Government to deliver the project over a span of less then two months. For my contribution, I decided to make a deck of cards that was multi-functional. The deck was a basic deck of 52 cards, however, when flipped around, each card was also a piece of a large puzzle, of which when fully pieced together, reveals the answer that solves the riddle on the back of the cards’ packaging.
Natal Day 2018
While at Code + Mortar, I was tasked to make holiday greetings for their social media accounts. I followed their brand guidelines and researched their past content to create the look and feel that they wanted.
Retro Illustration
The project was to illustrate an original setting containing one or more characters. It was to consist of a world with elements relating to each other in a certain space. The project had to demonstrate the use of perspective, an understanding of light and shadow, the use of cohesive colour, and an understanding of foreground, middle ground and background. I chose to create a scenery where the viewer looked down in perspective view from the gargoyle. I wanted the colors and feel to be retro, similar to an 1980s era feel.
Skype Redesign
This project was a recreational project I completed in my spare time. I learned to use Sketch, an application used to develop user interfaces. I chose to redesign a previous version of Skype because of its plain interface and for its difficult and confusing user experience.
In figure 1 (Fig. 1a), the design for the icons were plain and did not match the style of the company’s logo, which features a bubbly blue cloud and light-hearted feel. The buttons used to make a Skype call and the dial pads cause confusion because the icons are duplicated by being shown next to each recent call. This duplication clutters up the screen. Therefore, the goal was to reduce the number of icons (and resulting taps) for commonly used buttons on the interface. To achieve this, I kept the layout simple and clean to reduce user confusion (Fig. 1b).
For the “Credit and subscriptions” page, I redesigned it to give users different credit amount options in five dollar increments rather then having just one set amount (Fig. 2a). Skype appears to provide only one credit option based on the user’s current balance to round it to the nearest tenth; however, a user may want more or less credit than the set amount, so providing different credit options in smaller increments is more user friendly (Fig. 2b).
Card
Created a playful business card. I wanted the card to play on my name of "Kat". A cat that chases a ball of yarn.
